Twelve male foreign nationals were arrested for suspected drug-related offences in a comprehensive, overnight enforcement operation conducted by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) and multiple government agencies at a migrant worker dormitory in Woodlands. The extensive sweep, lasting more than four hours, began late Thursday (Nov 27) and continued into the early hours of Friday morning.
The Operation and Arrests
The operation was executed by officers from the CNB, in coordination with the Singapore Police Force (SPF), Health Sciences Authority (HSA), Ministry of Manpower (MOM), and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
Suspects: The 12 arrested men include 11 Bangladeshis and one Myanmar national, aged between 23 and 40.
Charges: One of the suspects, a 34-year-old Bangladeshi man, was arrested for suspected drug trafficking and drug consumption offences. Investigations for all arrested suspects are ongoing.
The Scene: Officers searched multiple rooms containing six bunk beds separated by cluttered metal lockers. In rooms where suspects were secured, officers meticulously searched lockers, beds, and luggage bags, while suspects pointed out their belongings.
Evidence Seized: In one room, officers were seen seizing yellow- and red-coloured items suspected to have been used for drug consumption, including a glass bottle, a cut straw, and a rubber tube with a mouthpiece, placing them into sealable bags as exhibits.
Media Access and Enforcement Statement
In a notable move, the media was allowed to accompany officers during this dormitory enforcement operation for the first time. Reporters observed the detailed search procedures and the escorting of suspects into vans for processing.
Superintendent Xanthus Tong Hyeng Ji, Deputy Commanding Officer of CNB Enforcement J Division, spoke on the operation's significance:
"Drugs have no place in Singapore – be it in the community, workplace, or residential premises – our enforcement efforts are geared towards early detection and intervention... This operation is part of our law enforcement efforts against drug abuse and trafficking and other criminal and illicit activities. Such activities will not be tolerated."
Separate HSA Violations
Separately, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) spokesperson confirmed that during the joint operation, they found three foreign nationals (aged 20 to 40) in possession of 10 sachets of smokeless tobacco.
Penalty: The three men were issued on-the-spot fines. The possession, purchase, and use of smokeless tobacco products are prohibited in Singapore, carrying a fine of up to S$2,000 upon conviction.
