A 64-year-old man died in the hospital after an incident at Fajar LRT station on the Bukit Panjang LRT Line on the evening of November 19, 2025. The man, who was riding a Personal Mobility Device (PMD), fell onto the train tracks.
Incident Details and Response
The incident occurred at approximately 9:35 pm. SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai confirmed the details of the fall and the swift emergency response:
Fall on Tracks: A passenger operating a PMD fell onto the tracks at Fajar station.
Traction Power Cut: Crucially, the SMRT operations control centre promptly switched off traction power to the tracks. Mr. Lam confirmed that the man was not struck by any incoming train due to this rapid action.
Emergency Services: SMRT staff immediately activated the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for assistance and filed a police report.
Investigation and Fatal Outcome
The police were alerted to the incident at about 9:35 pm and found the 64-year-old man lying motionless on the train tracks.
Hospitalization and Death: The SCDF conveyed the man to the Woodlands Health Campus, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigation Status: Based on preliminary investigations, the police stated that they do not suspect any foul play. Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fall are ongoing.
Context of LRT Safety
The incident at Fajar station follows a similar safety lapse late on October 27 at Bangkit LRT station (also on the Bukit Panjang LRT Line), where a drunken passenger fell onto the tracks, necessitating an emergency stop activation to cut power.
SMRT LRT stations utilize fixed barriers with gaps for passengers to board and alight, in contrast to the full screen doors used on MRT stations. This difference was addressed in Parliament in February, when then-Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat explained that installing platform screen doors at LRT stations is not practical due to the smaller size of LRT stations. Doing so would reduce passenger waiting areas and require additional equipment (power supply, communications, and signal control). SMRT has implemented other safety features, including an Artificial Intelligence-powered video analytics system launched in 2023, for passenger safety at these stations.
