Vapes Seized, Driver Arrested: Traffic Accident Claims the Life of an 83-Year-Old Woman

A severe traffic incident in a residential area has tragically resulted in the death of an elderly woman and the arrest of the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of illicit substances. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of November 8.

The police confirmed they were alerted to the accident involving a car and two pedestrians, both aged 83, at approximately 2:50 pm. The location of the collision was near Block 25 Teck Whye Lane.

The aftermath of the accident was captured in a video shared by an apartment resident, which showed the scene from a flat in an opposite building. The video footage clearly shows a grey sedan car that had forcefully mounted the kerb and come to a stop adjacent to the apartment block. The resident, who observed the scene unfold, recounted that when she looked out her window, two elderly people were already lying on the ground. She immediately concluded that they had been struck by the grey sedan.

The bystander noted that one of the seniors, a woman, was conscious and able to communicate with the members of the public who rushed forward to provide assistance. The other senior, identified in police reports as the victim who later died, was lying on the ground and was unconscious. The severity of the unconscious victim’s condition was immediately apparent as emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene. The resident detailed that medics had to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on the victim at the site of the crash. CPR efforts were continued even as the victim was being loaded into the ambulance and transported to the hospital.

Both 83-year-old pedestrians were subsequently taken to the hospital. The woman who was conscious at the scene was conveyed for treatment. However, the other woman, who was unconscious, sadly died after arrival at the hospital, confirming the tragic outcome of the incident.

Law enforcement officers immediately launched an investigation and arrested the driver of the car, a 29-year-old man. The man was arrested for the offense of driving without due care and attention under the influence of intoxicating substances causing death. This charge indicates that police suspect the driver's impairment played a direct role in the fatal collision.

During the subsequent investigation of the driver and the car, the police discovered e-vaporisers within the vehicle. Possession and use of such devices are illegal under the law. The matter concerning the illegal e-vaporisers found in the car has since been referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for further action and investigation related to the prohibited items.

The penalty for the offense of driving without due care and attention under the influence of intoxicating substances causing death is severe, reflecting the gravity of causing a fatal accident while impaired. The ongoing police investigations will focus on the exact circumstances of the collision, the nature of the intoxicating substances, and how the driver's actions led to the vehicle mounting the kerb and striking the pedestrians. Further details regarding the driver's identity and any formal charges are pending as police continue their work at the scene and through forensic analysis.

Filipino Jailed for using Fake PayNow Screenshots

A woman who meticulously crafted a scam using fake PayNow screenshots to obtain food and services from multiple establishments has been sentenced to one year and 11 months’ jail. Filipino national Santos-Tumalip Maria Monalyn Bagaporo, aged 33, pleaded guilty on November 13 to four charges, including cheating and theft, with three other charges taken into consideration. The total value of the food and services she obtained fraudulently exceeded $10,000. She would then use a photo editing application to alter the resulting transaction screenshot, making it falsely appear as if the money had been successfully sent to the restaurant or salon. In some cases, she even edited the sender details to make it look like the payments originated from different accounts. 1. House of Seafood (May 2022 – August 20...
