A former sales executive at a rental company in Singapore, Zeng Xianfu Gibson, has been sentenced to three years and seven months in jail for one of the country's largest rental scams.
He misused photos he took of rental units to scam 68 victims out of almost S$383,000. Zeng posted fake Airbnb listings using these photos, provided fake tenancy agreements, and scammed victims from various countries.
He used COVID-19 as an excuse when the victims were supposed to move in. Many were international students or locals seeking short-term accommodation.
The prosecutor highlighted the increase in home rental scams, which have caused inconvenience and anxiety to victims.
Zeng could have been jailed for up to 10 years for each cheating charge.
