Yusoff Ishak, a 37-year-old Indonesian national, was sentenced to four months in jail and five strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to illegally entering Singapore.
Despite being deported to Batam for immigration offences, Yusoff paid a boatman to board his sampan, and midway through the journey, he jumped off and swam back to Singapore.
This was not Yusoff's first offence; he had been previously convicted for similar immigration violations.
Two other Indonesian men, La Haji and Cimun, were also sentenced for illegal entry into Singapore.
La Haji received one year and five months' jail and five strokes of the cane, while Cimun was sentenced to a year in jail and six strokes of the cane.
All three men were labelled recalcitrant offenders by the judge.
