A 31-year-old Singaporean, Muhammad Danial Sukirman, was charged on Wednesday with neglecting 43 of his pet cats in a flat for approximately three months without providing adequate food and water.
As a result, two cats experienced "acute deaths" due to stress and were found in severely poor physical condition.
Danial faces 44 charges under the Animals and Birds Act, primarily for causing unnecessary pain and suffering to the cats, along with failing to attend a meeting with an authorised officer.
The cats were left unattended in a vacant flat in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 between August and November 2021, with inadequate living conditions.
Despite receiving a notice to attend before an authorised officer, Danial failed to comply.
The National Parks Board prosecutor seeks a jail term of two to four weeks.
Danial expressed his intention to plead guilty but requested a lawyer from the Public Defender's Office.
He will appear in court again on Mar 27, facing potential jail time and fines for each charge.
