Twelve individuals are under investigation by the Singapore Police Force for their alleged involvement in an extortion scheme that targeted various victims, including Members of Parliament, by using manipulated obscene images.
During a recent two-week operation, the police discovered the individuals, aged between 18 and 46, had reportedly provided bank accounts and SIM cards to support these criminal activities, often linked to overseas scam syndicates.
The suspects reportedly earned commissions for their involvement. Authorities have seized electronic devices and recovered about S$115,000 (US$84,000) in suspected criminal proceeds.
A 23-year-old woman among the group will face charges under the Computer Misuse Act for facilitating unauthorized access to computer material.
Over 170 reports of extortion have been filed in recent months, with victims receiving letters threatening to leak 'compromising' photos and videos unless a ransom was paid.
