A 15-year-old boy has been arrested for his alleged involvement in two cases of loan shark harassment at residential units in Yishun and Bedok, Singapore. The incidents were reported on November 20 and November 21, 2024.
The first case occurred at Yishun Street 22, where red paint was splashed on the unit’s main door and gate. Graffiti was also sprayed on the wall beside the unit. The second case, reported a day later, happened in Chai Chee Road. Similarly, red paint was found on the main door and gate, while graffiti was sprayed on the floor outside the unit.
Responding swiftly, the police launched investigations, leading to the teen’s arrest on November 22. He will face charges in court on November 23.
According to Singapore law, first-time offenders convicted of loan shark harassment can face severe penalties, including fines ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, and up to six strokes of the cane.
Loan shark harassment typically involves vandalism, intimidation, and other acts meant to pressure debtors or their associates into repayment. The police emphasized their zero-tolerance policy toward such crimes and reiterated the importance of public vigilance.
This case serves as a reminder of the dangers of associating with unlicensed moneylenders and the serious legal consequences for those involved in loan shark activities, even minors. The authorities encourage anyone with information on such crimes to report them via official hotlines.
