The Singapore Police have arrested a 24-year-old woman suspected of involvement in multiple loanshark harassment cases. On November 8 and 9, 2024, the Police were alerted to two incidents at residential units along Waterloo Street and Yishun Avenue 6. In both cases, the gates of the units were locked with bicycle locks, and debtor’s notes were left behind.
Following detailed investigations and aided by Police camera footage, officers from the Woodlands Police Division identified and apprehended the woman on November 20, 2024. Preliminary findings suggest she was involved in several other harassment cases across Singapore.
The woman will be charged in court on November 22, 2024, under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, loanshark harassment carries harsh penalties, including a fine ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, and up to six strokes of the cane.
The Police emphasized their zero tolerance for loanshark harassment, warning against acts such as property vandalism, public disturbances, and threats to public safety. They reiterated that such activities would be met with strict enforcement.
Members of the public are urged to avoid loansharks and not assist them in any capacity. Anyone with information on loansharking activities should report it to the Police by calling ‘999’.
