Elderly Indian National Accused of Molesting Four Women on SIA Flight

A 73-year-old Indian national, Balasubramanian Ramesh, is facing seven molestation charges after allegedly outraging the modesty of four women during a Singapore Airlines flight from the United States to Singapore on November 18, 2024.

The incidents reportedly occurred between 3.15 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on the same day. Court documents indicate that Balasubramanian allegedly molested the first woman around 3.15 a.m. and the second woman five minutes later. The second victim was reportedly targeted three additional times between 3.30 a.m. and 6 a.m. He is also accused of molesting a third woman at around 9.30 a.m. and a fourth at 5.30 p.m.

The victims’ identities remain protected under a gag order, and it is unclear whether they were passengers or crew members. The case was brought before a Singapore district court on November 25, and Balasubramanian is expected to plead guilty on December 13.

For each count of molestation, the punishment includes a jail term of up to three years, a fine, caning, or a combination of these. However, given Balasubramanian’s age, he is exempt from caning as he is over 50 years old.

This mid-air incident raises concerns about safety on long-haul flights, particularly for passengers and crew members. The Singapore Airlines flight was in transit for an extended period, with authorities acting swiftly upon its arrival in Singapore to address the complaints.

Such cases highlight the importance of vigilance and timely intervention during flights to ensure the safety and dignity of all onboard. Balasubramanian’s court appearance on December 13 will determine his next course of action.
