A 26-year-old maid from Myanmar, Junny Lal Awm Pui, was sentenced to nine months in jail on Nov 26 for abusing and killing a 15-year-old poodle named Boyboy. She pleaded guilty to charges under the Animals and Birds Act for causing unnecessary pain and suffering. One additional charge was considered during sentencing.
Her employer, identified as Heng, had instructed her to discipline the dog using physical punishment. On Jan 22, 2024, the maid pinned Boyboy to the ground and struck its head multiple times with her hands and a makeshift rod after it began eating without permission. Later that morning, she hung the dog by its harness on the balcony railing, as previously instructed by Heng to reduce its odor.
By the afternoon, Boyboy was bleeding from the mouth and unresponsive. He succumbed to severe head trauma caused by the beatings. Heng arranged for cremation and informed the dog’s owner, Lai, later. Suspicious of Boyboy’s sudden death, Lai reviewed motion-sensor footage from the balcony. He shared the evidence with his former girlfriend, who alerted NParks.
In court, the prosecution emphasized the cruelty of the act, supported by veterinary reports detailing the dog’s immense suffering. District Judge Ow Yong Tuck Leong acknowledged that the maid was following instructions but stressed she could have controlled her strength.
Junny expressed remorse, sobbing in court as video evidence was shown. She revealed that she has been unable to contact her family in Myanmar, where conflict rages, adding to her emotional distress.
NParks emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards animal cruelty and encouraged the public to report cases with evidence. Investigations into Heng’s role are ongoing.
