Deputy Secretary-General and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the urgent need for the People’s Action Party (PAP) to adapt its approach as Singapore faces a more contested political landscape ahead of the next General Election. Speaking at the PAP biennial conference on November 24, 2024, he acknowledged rising electoral stakes, with tighter margins in group representation constituencies (GRCs) and single-member constituencies (SMCs) threatening the PAP's dominance.
Mr. Wong highlighted that even a modest swing in votes could lead to the loss of multiple GRCs and ministers, significantly weakening governance at a time when global challenges demand strong leadership. He dismissed the assumption that a PAP victory is guaranteed, warning against complacency.
The PAP, he said, must now “come out in front” to explain policies, engage citizens, and demonstrate why they remain the most trustworthy and capable party to lead Singapore. Acknowledging public concerns over the rising cost of living, Mr. Wong noted that inflation is a global issue but assured that the government has implemented substantial measures to mitigate its impact on Singaporeans.
Mr. Wong also addressed the challenge of political renewal, pointing out that over half the current Cabinet is aged above 60. Building a strong leadership team requires new talent, and he emphasized the urgency of recruiting younger candidates to ensure continuity. Despite resistance from potential candidates due to public scrutiny and lifestyle changes, Mr. Wong remains focused on assembling the best team for Singapore’s future.
Opposition parties, he noted, exploit frustrations but lack viable solutions, further underscoring the PAP's responsibility to provide stable and effective governance. With the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee yet to be convened, a General Election is expected within the next year, marking a critical moment for Singapore’s political future.
