Flash floods struck Singapore’s Bukit Timah area on Sunday, Dec 29, following heavy rainfall during the afternoon. The national water agency PUB reported that the floods occurred along Dunearn Road and Bukit Timah Road near King Albert Park from about 5 PM due to high water levels in nearby drains and the Bukit Timah Canal.
PUB’s Quick Response
PUB’s Quick Response Teams were deployed in anticipation of the rain. Affected lanes were promptly closed off, and traffic was redirected to avoid floodwaters. Fortunately, the flooding subsided within 20 minutes, minimizing disruption.
Drainage Improvements in Bukit Timah
Bukit Timah has long been prone to flooding. PUB highlighted that drainage improvement works have been ongoing in the area for over a decade. Current projects include widening and deepening a 900m stretch of the Bukit Timah Canal between Rifle Range Road and Jalan Kampong Chantek. These works are expected to enhance flood protection and are set to be completed by 2026.
Rainfall Records
The flash floods were triggered by an intense downpour, with PUB recording 134.6mm of rainfall in central Singapore between 3:15 PM and 5:25 PM. This amount is 41% of December’s average monthly rainfall and ranks among the top 1% of daily maximum rainfall since 1978.
The northeast monsoon season typically brings heavy rainfall during this period. PUB warned that sudden and intense storms might temporarily overwhelm drainage systems, causing localised flooding that usually subsides within an hour.
Flood Risk Warnings
In addition to Bukit Timah, PUB issued flood risk warnings for nearly 20 locations, including Toa Payoh, Choa Chu Kang, and Chinatown.
Staying Prepared
PUB advised residents to stay updated via the MyENV app and PUB Flood Alerts Telegram channel to receive warnings about heavy rain and flood-prone areas. These tools can help residents avoid risk locations and ensure safety during intense weather conditions.
Long-Term Outlook
While drainage improvement works continue, Sunday’s flash floods highlight Singapore’s ongoing vulnerability to extreme weather. PUB’s quick response and the community’s preparedness remain vital as the country navigates the challenges of the northeast monsoon season.
