A former Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) student, now 23, has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for repeatedly filming his then-girlfriend in compromising situations without her consent. The offences occurred between 2020 and 2022 during their relationship, starting when the offender was 19.
The Crimes
The man’s actions involved secretly recording intimate videos of the victim while she was asleep, showering, or during consensual sexual acts, often using deceit. On one occasion, he convinced her to wear an eye mask during intimacy, stopping her from removing it to continue filming her.
After their relationship ended in 2022, he escalated his actions by distributing explicit images of the victim to her own brother in 2023. This came after his repeated attempts to contact her through newly created social media accounts were ignored.
The victim only learned of the recordings when her brother informed her of the messages and photos sent by her ex-boyfriend. A police report was lodged immediately, leading to the man’s arrest.
Impact on the Victim
The victim described feeling severely traumatised, fearing that her private images might surface publicly and ruin her life. She now uses hidden camera detectors in new environments and suffers emotional distress when recalling the incidents.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ariel Tan highlighted the significant harm inflicted on the victim, who was younger and vulnerable due to the trust placed in her boyfriend.
Court Sentencing
The offender pleaded guilty to five counts of voyeurism and one amalgamated charge of distributing intimate images. Another five voyeurism charges were considered during sentencing.
The defence sought probation, citing the offender’s young age during the crimes. However, the court rejected this, emphasizing the calculated nature of his actions, the abuse of trust, and the escalation of offences over time.
Deputy Principal District Judge Luke Tan stressed that deterrence was the priority, given the severity and repeated nature of the offences. He noted the victim’s vulnerability and significant emotional harm, which warranted a strong sentence.
Legal Consequences
Voyeurism in Singapore carries a maximum sentence of two years in jail, a fine, caning, or a combination of these. Distributing intimate images without consent can result in up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine, caning, or a combination of these penalties.
For the amalgamated charge of distributing intimate images, the offender faced double the potential penalties.
