10 Years’ Jail for Violent Ex-Boyfriend Who Assaulted and Raped Ex-Girlfriend

A 26-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years and six weeks’ jail and nine strokes of the cane on January 20 for raping his ex-girlfriend in her bedroom. He pleaded guilty to one count each of rape, voluntarily causing hurt, and mischief, with two additional charges of rape and sexual assault considered in sentencing. The offender cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity.

Abusive Relationship and Breakup

The offender was in a relationship with the victim from July 2020 to May 2021, during which he admitted to being physically abusive when he deemed her actions “ridiculous.” After their breakup, he continued contacting her despite her objections, even after learning she was dating someone else. The victim eventually blocked him on social media, prompting the man to confront her at her home on August 21, 2021.

The Assault and Rape

Gaining entry to the house through her unaware family members, the man entered the victim’s room, locking the door. He became enraged when she remained unresponsive to his questioning, physically assaulting her by slapping her repeatedly. He told her, “This is what you asked for,” before raping her, claiming it was “for her own good” and to “educate her to speak up.”

Following the assault, the victim pretended to agree with him to pacify him and managed to leave the house at 4:30 a.m. She initially did not report the matter but was compelled to do so after he returned to her home uninvited on October 15, 2021.

Impact on the Victim

The victim endured severe psychological trauma, unable to verbalize her emotions for over a year. She lived in constant fear of encountering someone resembling her abuser and chose not to inform her family due to fear of judgment and potential ostracization.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

The prosecution described the offender as a “violent abuser and despicable rapist,” emphasizing the deliberate infliction of special trauma on the victim. The offender’s actions were seen as a calculated attempt to dominate and psychologically harm her, leaving lasting scars.

Defense lawyers argued the offenses were committed in the heat of the moment due to emotional turmoil, though they acknowledged the deliberate nature of the inflicted trauma. The court imposed a sentence aligned with the prosecution’s recommendation, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice for the victim.
