Early Morning Fire Erupts at Amoy Street Hawker Centre at Maxwell Road

A fire broke out at a popular food stall in Amoy Street Food Centre early on January 19, 2025, causing significant damage but no injuries. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the incident at approximately 4:55 a.m. and responded promptly to extinguish the flames.

The blaze involved the contents of Yuan Chun Famous Lor Mee, a well-known hawker stall located within the food centre at 7 Maxwell Road. Video footage of the incident, shared widely on social media, showed the interior of the stall engulfed in flames. In the video, a man is seen attempting to move items away from the front of the stall to prevent further damage.

Six individuals present at the food centre at the time managed to evacuate safely on their own, according to SCDF. The fire was extinguished using a water jet, and authorities confirmed there were no injuries resulting from the incident.

As news of the fire spread, the video footage received significant attention online, with over 600 shares and more than 1,000 reactions on social media platforms by the evening of January 20. The footage sparked discussions among netizens, many of whom expressed concern for the affected stall owner and employees.

The SCDF is currently investigating the cause of the fire, which remains unknown at this point. In the meantime, efforts to assess the damage and ensure the safety of the surrounding stalls are underway.

Yuan Chun Famous Lor Mee is a long-standing and popular stall in the hawker centre, renowned for its flavorful and affordable dishes. Its sudden closure due to the fire has left many patrons disappointed, with some taking to social media to share fond memories of dining there.

Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the importance of fire safety, particularly in shared spaces like hawker centres where the risk of accidents can have widespread impacts. SCDF advises stall operators to routinely inspect and maintain their cooking equipment, ensure proper ventilation, and adhere to fire safety guidelines to reduce the likelihood of such incidents.

These unauthorized services operated both within Singapore and across the border to Malaysia, posing significant risks to passengers. The LTA has issued a stern warning to the public, advising against using such illegal services due to the lack of proper licensing and insurance, which can leave passengers vulnerable in the event of accidents. The operation underscores LTA’s commitment to ensuring the safety and regulation of ride-hailing services in Singapore. Drivers caught offering illegal ride-hailing services without a valid Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Licence face severe penalties, including fines of up to $3,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. These measures are in place to deter unlicensed operators and protect passengers from potential harm. Illegal ride-hailing services oft...
