Elderly Couple Allegedly Abused by Caregiver in Henderson Flat

Ms. Huang had a harrowing experience when her 91-year-old father needed hospital care for a swollen and painful foot on January 4. The distressing situation unraveled further after her investigation into the cause of his injury.

The elderly man informed the doctor that he had suffered a fall the previous night. Kaya, a 40-year-old domestic worker from Myanmar employed by the family since 2024, confirmed the fall, saying it occurred on January 3. To verify the sequence of events, Ms. Huang reviewed CCTV footage from their three-room flat in Henderson Crescent, where her elderly parents and the caregiver lived.

The footage revealed that her father had fallen at around 3 p.m. on January 3. Shockingly, instead of assisting him, Kaya allegedly left him on the floor and turned her attention to Ms. Huang’s 90-year-old mother. The video showed Kaya dragging the elderly woman into the living room, throttling her neck while she was on the floor, and roughly pushing her onto the sofa.

The situation left Ms. Huang deeply concerned for her parents’ safety. She discovered bruises on her mother’s chin and limbs, which she believes were caused by the alleged manhandling captured on video. For about 20 minutes, the maid appeared to mistreat her mother while her father remained helplessly on the floor.

Disturbed by what she witnessed, Ms. Huang immediately dismissed the caregiver on the same day and lodged a police report against her. She also took her mother to the hospital for a thorough medical examination to assess the injuries.

The ordeal has sparked alarm over the treatment of vulnerable elderly individuals under the care of hired helpers. While domestic workers play a crucial role in caregiving, cases of mistreatment highlight the importance of vigilance, open communication, and the use of tools like CCTV for oversight.

Families hiring caregivers for elderly relatives are reminded to regularly check in, monitor their loved ones’ well-being, and act promptly if they suspect neglect or abuse. Authorities are investigating the case, and Ms. Huang’s family hopes justice will be served.

New Punggol Northshore BTO Plagued by Water Seepage and Electrical Hazards

***Update: HDB, Maincon and Consultant has came down to the unit to check. Will update on status once we have more information. A Punggol Northshore BTO homeowner, who moved into his newly renovated flat in July 2024, has voiced frustration over severe water leakage issues that have left his unit unsafe and unlivable. Water has been observed seeping from an electrical powerpoint, with puddles forming on the floor and walls showing bubbling and signs of damage from moisture. The source of the leak appears to be an external wall adjacent to the master bedroom, according to assessments by the main contractor. However, the leakage has already caused significant damage to the flat's walls and paintwork, leaving the homeowner distressed. Adding to the frustration, the main contractor advised the homeowner to avoid using the affected power switches in the living room and bedroom due to the risk of a short circuit. Despite the warning, the homeowner has no choice but to turn on the light...

Crackdown on Illegal Ride-Hailing with 4 Drivers Caught in LTA Operation

In a recent operation conducted by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore, four drivers were caught and had their vehicles impounded for providing illegal ride-hailing services. These unauthorized services operated both within Singapore and across the border to Malaysia, posing significant risks to passengers. The LTA has issued a stern warning to the public, advising against using such illegal services due to the lack of proper licensing and insurance, which can leave passengers vulnerable in the event of accidents. The operation underscores LTA’s commitment to ensuring the safety and regulation of ride-hailing services in Singapore. Drivers caught offering illegal ride-hailing services without a valid Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Licence face severe penalties, including fines of up to $3,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. These measures are in place to deter unlicensed operators and protect passengers from potential harm. Illegal ride-hailing services oft...
