Local Actor Lawrence Pang Duped in Scam Using Fake Photos of Vanessa Ho

Veteran Singaporean actor Laurence Pang, 78, has revealed details of a love scam that cost him S$35,000. The scam involved doctored photos of local celebrity Vanessa Ho, used by a Filipino fraudster named "Mika" to lure him into a fake online business investment.

Pang, known for roles in popular television dramas like Tanglin and Sunny Side Up, shared his experience on a Filipino public service programme, Raffy Tulfo In Action, on Jan 17, 2025. He recounted how he met “Mika” on a dating platform and was convinced to invest nearly 1.5 million pesos in what turned out to be a fraudulent scheme.

How Scammers Exploited Vanessa Ho’s Images

The scammer doctored images of Vanessa Ho, a well-known local celebrity and Star Search 2019 finalist, to impersonate “Mika.” The altered photos were traced back to Ho’s Instagram posts, including one taken at a Japanese restaurant and another from a mattress promotional campaign.

On her Instagram account, Ho addressed the situation, explaining how the fraudster manipulated her photos to deceive Pang. “The initial news, shared on TikTok via Raffy Tulfo In Action, included edited images that resembled my original photos,” she wrote.

Ho clarified that while the images were taken from her social media, she had no involvement in the scam. She also expressed gratitude to local media outlets for amending reports to emphasize the scammer’s misuse of her images.

Media Response and Clarifications

One prominent website initially published screenshots of the doctored images but later revised its article after Ho pointed out the potential for misinterpretation. The platform added an editor’s note specifying that the screenshots originated from Raffy Tulfo In Action and were manipulated by the scammer.

This clarification was crucial as some readers might have mistakenly believed Ho was linked to the fraudulent activities. Ho thanked the media outlet for updating its coverage, ensuring the public understood her position as a victim of photo misuse.

Raising Awareness About Online Scams

Ho used the incident to emphasize the importance of vigilance in the digital age, where identity theft and online scams are increasingly common. She urged individuals to verify the authenticity of online interactions and to be cautious when sharing personal or financial information.

Meanwhile, Pang’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of online scams, particularly those targeting vulnerable individuals. The actor, like many others, was manipulated by the combination of emotional connection and fabricated evidence provided by the scammer.

Protecting Personal Data and Reputation

This incident highlights the risks celebrities and public figures face in protecting their images and online presence. Ho’s proactive response helped clarify her lack of involvement, but it also underscores the broader issue of image manipulation in online scams.

Authorities and media outlets have a role to play in preventing similar cases by educating the public about common scam tactics and promoting cybersecurity measures.

Conclusion

The love scam involving Laurence Pang and Vanessa Ho’s doctored photos sheds light on the growing sophistication of fraudsters. While Pang suffered financial loss, the swift response from Ho and media outlets helped uncover the truth and prevent further misunderstanding.

This case underscores the importance of verifying online interactions and protecting personal data in today’s digital landscape. Both individuals and media organizations must remain vigilant to combat the misuse of information and prevent similar scams in the future.

Crackdown on Illegal Ride-Hailing with 4 Drivers Caught in LTA Operation

In a recent operation conducted by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore, four drivers were caught and had their vehicles impounded for providing illegal ride-hailing services. These unauthorized services operated both within Singapore and across the border to Malaysia, posing significant risks to passengers. The LTA has issued a stern warning to the public, advising against using such illegal services due to the lack of proper licensing and insurance, which can leave passengers vulnerable in the event of accidents. The operation underscores LTA’s commitment to ensuring the safety and regulation of ride-hailing services in Singapore. Drivers caught offering illegal ride-hailing services without a valid Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Licence face severe penalties, including fines of up to $3,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. These measures are in place to deter unlicensed operators and protect passengers from potential harm. Illegal ride-hailing services oft...
