Man Faces Life Sentence for Stabbing Lover’s New Boyfriend in Choa Chu Kang

A 63-year-old married father of three, Ong Eng Siew, pleaded guilty to attempted murder after attacking his former lover’s new boyfriend, Mr. Ku Teck Eng, with a knife on 23 Jan 2024. The violent incident occurred at the void deck of Block 407, Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3, on June 12, 2021.

Mr. Ku, then 52, suffered severe injuries, including a chest wound that lacerated his heart's left ventricle. Emergency surgery saved his life, but the injuries could have been fatal.

Ong’s relationship with his 42-year-old lover began in 2019 but deteriorated after she discovered he was married. Ong’s excessive gambling, drinking, and erratic behavior led to their breakup in April 2021. After the breakup, Ong harassed and assaulted his former lover, including an incident on June 1, where he slammed her head against his van and threatened her new boyfriend.

On the evening of June 12, Ong, intoxicated after hours of drinking, waited at the void deck of his ex-lover’s home with a 12cm knife hidden in a plastic bag. When the couple arrived, Ong confronted Mr. Ku, accusing him of stealing his former partner. He then launched a brutal attack, stabbing Mr. Ku’s chest and slashing his stomach. Ong also assaulted his former lover when she tried to intervene.

Mr. Ku managed to escape to a nearby provision shop while residents called the police. Ong fled but was arrested later near his home. Police recovered the discarded knife an hour after the arrest.

Mr. Ku’s injuries included a life-threatening chest wound that caused blood to accumulate around his heart, as well as abdominal injuries requiring further surgery. He was hospitalized for nine days and needed intensive care.

Ong admitted to his actions but contested the impact of his mental state on his crimes. Diagnosed with adjustment disorder, Ong claimed his emotional instability stemmed from his breakup, financial difficulties, and the death of his brother. However, the prosecution argued that jealousy, anger, and alcohol fueled the attack.

For attempted murder, Ong faces a potential life sentence or up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine.
