Monsoon Surge Alert, Singapore Braces for Flash Floods from 10 Jan to 13 Jan

 


Singapore is bracing for potential flash floods between Friday (Jan 10) and Monday due to a monsoon surge. The National Environment Agency (NEA) issued an advisory on Thursday, alerting the public to the possibility of intense rainfall and cool, windy weather over the four-day period.

A monsoon surge occurs when strong winds over the South China Sea create extensive rainclouds, leading to prolonged rainfall and cooler conditions. Singapore is expected to experience moderate to heavy thundery showers, with temperatures potentially dropping to as low as 22°C in some areas, the NEA noted.

The national water agency PUB warned that intense rainfall could temporarily overwhelm canals and drains, causing flash floods in low-lying areas. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and monitor real-time weather updates via the MyENV app or the PUB Flood Alerts Telegram channel.

As Singapore grapples with increasingly erratic weather patterns and more intense storms linked to climate change, PUB continues its efforts to raise public awareness. The agency launched its first flood resilience campaign in November, aiming to educate Singaporeans about flood risks and preparedness.

“Singapore's urbanized topography makes it vulnerable to sudden and localized flooding,” PUB said. “Heavy storms, even outside of monsoon seasons, can overwhelm our drainage systems temporarily.”

PUB recommends following the “FLASH” tips to stay safe during potential flooding:

  • Follow PUB flood alerts for timely updates.
  • Learn how to prepare for floods by accessing resources.
  • Avoid flooded areas to prevent accidents.
  • Share PUB flood updates with others.
  • Help others in need when it is safe to do so.

The agency’s Get Flood-Wise campaign provides comprehensive advice for pedestrians, motorists, homeowners, and businesses. Tips include avoiding driving through flooded roads, securing property, and planning alternative routes during heavy rain.

While flash floods are not uncommon in Singapore, the current monsoon surge underscores the importance of remaining prepared and resilient. The NEA and PUB will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. Residents are urged to take proactive steps to ensure their safety and minimize disruptions.

With the combination of strong winds, heavy rain, and cooler temperatures, Singaporeans are advised to stay indoors when possible, avoid flood-prone areas, and dress warmly during the cool spell.
