Progress Singapore Party (PSP) Chairman Dr. Tan Cheng Bock emphasized the importance of maintaining gentlemanly conduct and clean politics during the upcoming general election, calling for an end to political violence.
Dr. Tan made these remarks on Jan. 12 during a walkabout at Keat Hong Food Centre and Market, where he interacted with residents and distributed the party’s newsletter, The Palm. His comments come in the wake of an incident between PSP and People’s Action Party (PAP) volunteers during a Jan. 4 walkabout in Bukit Gombak, Chua Chu Kang GRC.
Both parties have alleged harassment from the other side, offering differing accounts of the altercation. PAP’s Chua Chu Kang GRC MP Low Yen Ling claimed that a PAP volunteer was slapped twice, among other aggressive acts. However, PSP leaders categorically denied any use of violence, asserting that their volunteers were falsely accused.
In a Facebook post on Jan. 10, Dr. Tan reiterated that PSP does not condone violence and promised disciplinary action if any volunteer had acted aggressively. However, he also assured that the party would fight back against false accusations. Similarly, Ms. Low posted on Facebook, agreeing that violence had no place in political engagement and expressing her trust in the police investigation.
PSP Secretary-General Hazel Poa confirmed that the police have reached out to the party regarding the incident. Dr. Tan refrained from speculating about the situation, stating, “Let the police investigate and clear the matter.”
During the Keat Hong walkabout, Dr. Tan noted that residents had not brought up the incident, and he emphasized that PSP remains focused on connecting with the community and earning their votes. Reflecting on his political journey, Dr. Tan shared nostalgic moments with residents, many of whom remembered him from his time as a PAP MP in Ayer Rajah SMC from 1980 to 2006.
Dr. Tan expressed hope for a future free from political violence, recalling the challenging political landscape of the past but asserting that such behavior should no longer have a place in Singapore’s politics.
PSP first contested Chua Chu Kang GRC in the 2020 General Election and is gearing up for another attempt. With Dr. Tan’s leadership and personal rapport with the community, the party aims to focus on constructive engagement and uphold the values of respect and integrity in its campaign.
