Punggol Fire Forces Evacuation of 60 Residents

Earlier this morning at around 5:05 AM, firefighters from Punggol, Sengkang, and Tampines Fire Stations responded to a fire on the seventh floor of 224A, Sumang Lane. Upon arrival, black smoke was seen billowing from a unit, and the fire was found to have engulfed a bedroom.

Using a water jet, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) managed to extinguish the fire promptly. Four occupants of the affected unit had evacuated before SCDF’s arrival, while about 60 residents from neighboring units were evacuated as a precautionary measure by both police officers and firefighters.

One person was assessed for smoke inhalation by SCDF paramedics and subsequently conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for further treatment.

Preliminary Findings and Fire Cause

Initial investigations suggest that the fire was of electrical origin, originating in the bedroom. Electrical fires are a recurring concern in residential settings and often stem from improper use or maintenance of electrical appliances and wiring.

SCDF’s Fire Prevention Tips

To prevent electrical fires, SCDF has urged the public to adopt the following good practices:

  1. Avoid Overloading Power Sockets: Overloaded sockets can overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.
  2. Turn Off Electrical Appliances When Not in Use: This minimizes the risk of overheating or short circuits.
  3. Check Wires Regularly: Replace or repair frayed or damaged wires promptly.
  4. Avoid Running Wires Under Carpets: Concealed wires can overheat and go unnoticed until it’s too late.
  5. Use Safety-Mark Certified Appliances: Ensure all electrical appliances and plugs meet safety standards. A list of certified products is available at the Consumer Product Safety website.
  6. Monitor Charging Devices: Do not leave devices charging unattended for extended periods or overnight.

Quick Actions and Public Awareness Save Lives

The incident highlights the importance of emergency preparedness and fire safety awareness. The swift response by SCDF and the proactive evacuation measures prevented further injuries and potentially saved lives.

Residents are reminded to familiarize themselves with fire safety practices and evacuation procedures. Being vigilant about potential fire hazards, especially those caused by electrical equipment, can significantly reduce the risk of such incidents.
