Three men were sentenced to jail on January 13, 2025, for a violent, unprovoked assault on two strangers near Prinsep Street in April 2024. The men – Shahrul Danish Zainal Abidin, 24; Shamirul Azwat Sainal, 21; and his brother Muhammad Fatula Sainal, 23 – were convicted of voluntarily causing hurt, with Fatula additionally charged for using a dangerous weapon.

The incident occurred on April 25, 2024, after the trio left a bar around midnight. While walking near a sheltered area, Shamirul approached a man, referred to as V1, who was with a friend vomiting on the ground. The two started chatting about motorcycles, but tensions escalated when Fatula joined the conversation.

Without warning, Fatula shoved and punched V1, igniting a physical altercation. Shamirul and Shahrul joined in, with Shamirul punching V1's face and Shahrul landing additional blows. Fatula then used a karambit knife, which he had brought for "protection," to slash V1 on his upper lip.

V1 fell to the ground but the assault continued, with Shamirul kicking him repeatedly. A bystander, identified as V2, intervened to de-escalate the situation but was slashed on the shoulder by Fatula using the same weapon.

Both victims were taken to the hospital. V1 sustained injuries, including a head wound, a cut to his lip, and facial abrasions, while V2 suffered a shoulder laceration. The three attackers were intoxicated during the assault and were arrested the following day, April 26, 2024.

In court, prosecutors highlighted the severity of the crimes. Fatula faced a more serious charge due to his use of a dangerous weapon, with Deputy Public Prosecutor Clara Low emphasizing its potential for severe harm. The court sentenced him to 24 weeks in jail. Shamirul and Shahrul received six-week jail terms each for their roles in the unprovoked attack.

This case underscores the serious consequences of violence and the use of weapons in public. The maximum penalty for voluntarily causing hurt includes a three-year jail term, a fine of up to $5,000, or both. For causing hurt with a dangerous weapon, offenders can face up to seven years in prison, a fine, caning, or a combination of these punishments.
