Child Rescued After Foot Gets Stuck in Escalator in Sengkang Grand Mall

A young girl was taken to the hospital after her foot became trapped in an escalator at a shopping mall in Buangkok on February 22.

A video of the incident, shared on social media, shows a woman crouching beside the distressed child, attempting to comfort her as she cries out in pain. Another woman can be heard on a phone call with emergency responders, clarifying that she is not the girl’s mother.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed receiving a call for assistance at approximately 6.50 pm. The incident occurred at 70 Compassvale Bow, the location of Sengkang Grand Mall. The child’s left foot had become wedged in the side of the escalator. Rescuers used specialized equipment to release her before transporting her to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital for treatment.

The severity of her injuries remains unclear, but the incident has sparked discussions about escalator safety, particularly concerning children.

Escalator accidents are not uncommon, and experts stress the importance of proper usage and parental supervision. Many incidents occur due to distractions, improper footwear, or children standing too close to the escalator edges. The brushes found along the sides of escalators are designed to warn users that they are too close, not to be used for cleaning shoes, a common misconception.

A former escalator technician commented on the incident, urging parents to pay closer attention to their children when using escalators. He noted that many people misuse the side brushes, assuming they are for cleaning shoes, rather than recognizing them as a safety feature. He also criticized excessive phone usage, pointing out that parents often get distracted by their mobile devices while accompanying children on escalators.

Authorities conduct regular maintenance and safety checks on escalators in commercial spaces, but unexpected incidents still occur. Escalator manufacturers design these machines with safety features to minimize accidents, but improper use, such as allowing children to play near the edges, can lead to dangerous situations.

Experts advise parents and caregivers to take several precautions:

  • Hold children’s hands while using escalators.
  • Ensure they stand in the center, away from the edges.
  • Avoid loose footwear such as sandals or crocs, which can get caught in moving parts.
  • Never allow children to sit or play on escalator steps.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions such as mobile phone usage.

Escalator safety awareness campaigns have been launched in the past to educate the public, but accidents continue to happen due to lapses in attention and misuse of safety features.

While no further updates have been provided on the child’s condition, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance. Mall operators may need to reinforce safety measures, including clearer warning signs and public education efforts to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.
