A total of 21 motorists, aged between 31 and 68, are set to be charged with drink-driving offences on February 20. These motorists were arrested between July 2024 and February 2025 after failing breathalyser tests during routine police checks.
Among the 21 offenders, three were repeat offenders. In addition, a 68-year-old man faces an additional charge for driving without due care or reasonable consideration.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has been conducting regular enforcement operations to deter drink driving and enhance road safety. Those found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol face strict penalties. First-time offenders may be fined between S$5,000 and S$20,000 and could face a jail term of up to two years. Repeat offenders will serve mandatory jail time if convicted. Offenders may also be disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles, affecting their ability to hold a valid driving licence in the future.
One of the more serious incidents involved a 68-year-old motorist who drove against the traffic flow when entering a carpark along Lorong 1 Toa Payoh on August 20, 2024. When he was unable to pass through the carpark gantry, he reversed his vehicle and mounted the right-side road kerb. Investigations revealed that he was a repeat drink-driving offender.
Apart from drink driving, he faces an additional charge for driving without due care or reasonable consideration. If found guilty, he could be fined up to S$1,500, jailed for up to six months, or both. For repeat offenders, the penalties increase to a fine of up to S$3,000 and a jail term of up to 12 months.
The SPF has repeatedly warned that drink driving is a serious offence that endangers not just the driver but also other road users. The consequences of impaired driving can be severe, including accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
Authorities continue to urge all motorists to abide by traffic laws and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol. They encourage individuals to plan ahead by arranging alternative transport if they intend to consume alcohol.
The latest arrests reflect an ongoing effort by law enforcement to crack down on drink driving and reinforce road safety. With stricter penalties and active enforcement, the authorities aim to deter reckless behaviour and reduce the risks associated with intoxicated driving.
As the number of cases remains a concern, the police have emphasized that they will continue to take firm action against offenders. Motorists are reminded to exercise responsibility and make safer choices to prevent endangering themselves and others on the road.
