A newly completed Built-To-Order (BTO) flat in Tengah recently went viral after the homeowner encountered serious water seepage issues. A video circulating online showed water flooding from both the ceiling and a pre-installed Daikin fancoil unit. This incident has raised concerns about the Tengah Town Centralized Cooling System, Singapore’s first large-scale district cooling system for public housing.
The Tengah Town Centralized Cooling System is designed to provide energy-efficient air-conditioning by circulating chilled water to homes and commercial buildings within Tengah. Operated by SP Group, the system is meant to offer a more sustainable and cost-effective cooling solution compared to traditional air-conditioning units. However, the viral video has sparked debate over the reliability of this system in actual home settings.
In the footage, significant amounts of water were seen seeping from the ceiling, pooling onto the floor, while another part of the room showed water spilling out from the air-conditioning unit itself. Such issues are highly concerning for new homeowners, as they could indicate defects in the cooling system, poor installation, or drainage issues.
Despite the alarming nature of the leak, the homeowner provided a positive update shortly after, stating that SP Group responded promptly. Within just 30 minutes of submitting a report, technicians arrived at the unit to address the issue. The homeowner praised the quick response and later confirmed that the air-conditioning system was functioning well, even describing it as "very cold" after repairs were completed.
While it is reassuring that the issue was swiftly resolved, the incident has drawn mixed reactions from the public. Some viewers expressed concerns over the reliability of the centralized cooling system, questioning whether similar leaks might occur in other Tengah BTO units. Others pointed out that as a newly implemented system, some teething issues are expected, and it is crucial that SP Group continues to provide efficient support and maintenance.
SP Group has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident, but their quick response demonstrates their commitment to resolving technical issues efficiently. Moving forward, BTO homeowners in Tengah will likely keep a close watch on their cooling systems to ensure there are no recurring problems.
