The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has confirmed its intention to contest Marsiling-Yew Tee Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the upcoming General Election, party chief Chee Soon Juan stated on March 30. This marks SDP’s third consecutive attempt at winning the GRC, where Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is the anchor Member of Parliament (MP).
SDP had previously contested Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC in the 2015 and 2020 elections, securing 31.27% and 36.82% of the vote, respectively. With 119,352 voters in the constituency for the upcoming election, the party hopes to build on its previous performance.
SDP treasurer Surayah Akbar has been actively engaging residents on social media, fueling speculation about her potential candidacy. However, Dr Chee remained non-committal when asked whether she would be fielded, stating that an official announcement would be made later.
The party has been focusing on what Dr Chee calls a “northern strategy” for the 2025 election. This includes contesting in Sembawang GRC and the newly carved-out Sembawang West Single Member Constituency (SMC), where Dr Chee himself will stand as a candidate. Sembawang West is one of six new SMCs and will have 24,153 voters.
SDP chairman Professor Paul Tambyah reinforced the party’s commitment to its strategy, emphasizing the importance of building a strong opposition presence in northern constituencies. He stated that the party aims to field its “best team” in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.
When asked if SDP would also contest in other constituencies from the previous election, such as Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Prof Tambyah said the decision would depend on the party’s resources, voter sentiment, and coordination with other opposition parties.
In GE2020, SDP had also contested in Bukit Batok SMC, Bukit Panjang SMC, and Yuhua SMC. However, Yuhua and Bukit Batok have since been merged into the new Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC. Despite these changes, SDP has confirmed that Prof Tambyah will stand again in Bukit Panjang.
Dr Chee also revealed that SDP is currently in discussions with other opposition parties to optimize electoral strategy and minimize vote-splitting. He stressed that the party’s primary goal is to ensure that Singaporeans have a credible alternative to the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP).
With GE2025 approaching, SDP’s strategy will be closely watched, especially in constituencies where it has gained traction in past elections. The question remains whether its “northern strategy” will translate into electoral success.
