On March 18, 2025, Meksuwan Suwapit, a 37-year-old Thai national, was sentenced to one week in jail and fined S$2,000 after he was caught urinating inside an MRT train while intoxicated. He pleaded guilty to performing an obscene act in public and committing a public nuisance. A separate charge of appearing drunk in public was taken into consideration during sentencing.
Incident Details
The incident took place on January 25, 2025, when Meksuwan, an inspection engineer, had drinks with friends in Somerset. He consumed a bottle of red wine from around 4:30 PM before boarding the train from Somerset MRT Station to head home to Jurong East.
At approximately 8 PM, while the train was traveling between Ang Mo Kio MRT and Khatib MRT, Meksuwan unzipped his pants and urinated inside the train cabin. His urine spread across the moving train’s floor, leading to some passengers stepping on it unknowingly. Commuters who saw the act were shocked and disgusted, moving away from him to avoid the mess.
A commuter captured a photo of Meksuwan in the act and later reported the incident to police officers on patrol. The train was intercepted at Woodlands MRT Station, where Meksuwan was taken to the first aid room for questioning. He was arrested that day and charged two days later.
Court Proceedings & Sentencing
During the court hearing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Teo Lu Jia described Meksuwan’s actions as brazen, noting that his exposure in public had caused significant disturbance to fellow commuters. She also highlighted that this case was part of a rising trend of public urination incidents at MRT stations.
In January 2025 alone, at least three men were caught urinating at MRT stations, including Outram Park MRT Station and Potong Pasir MRT Station, where offenders were each fined S$2,000.
According to the National Environment Agency, an average of 600 individuals were fined yearly between 2020 and 2024 for urinating or defecating in public, reflecting a persistent problem of public hygiene violations.
DPP Teo sought a week’s jail sentence for Meksuwan’s obscene act, emphasizing the need for deterrence to prevent similar incidents. She also requested the maximum S$2,000 fine for the public nuisance charge.
During sentencing, District Judge Salina Ishak agreed with the prosecution, noting that Meksuwan had fully exposed himself in a relatively crowded train. She emphasized that his actions had caused significant annoyance and disgust among commuters and imposed the suggested sentence of one week in jail and a S$2,000 fine.
Legal Consequences
- Committing an obscene act in public: Up to three months in jail, a fine, or both.
- Public nuisance: Up to S$2,000 fine.
- Being drunk in public and causing annoyance: Up to six months in jail, a S$1,000 fine, or both.
This case highlights the seriousness of public indecency and disorderly behavior in Singapore, particularly in public transport settings, where such actions can cause widespread disturbance and inconvenience.
