Ex-Orchard Towers Accused Jailed Again for KTV Assault

A repeat offender has been sentenced to five months in jail after attacking a man at a KTV outlet, violating the terms of his remission order. Tan Hong Sheng, 28, was previously linked to the high-profile 2019 Orchard Towers case, where he was initially charged with murder but later convicted of a lesser offence.

In March 2021, he was sentenced to four years and nine months’ imprisonment with 12 strokes of the cane for being with someone who had a weapon and for two unrelated rioting charges. He was released in 2022 under a remission order, requiring him to remain crime-free until June 2024. However, in November 2023, he got into a violent altercation, leading to his latest conviction.

The incident took place on November 27, 2023, at a KTV outlet in Jurong. Tan was using the restroom when a 35-year-old man entered and stood at a nearby urinal. Prosecutors stated that Tan took offence at the victim looking at him repeatedly. The victim later clarified that he had been looking at Tan’s hand out of concern, as Tan was holding a lit cigarette.

Feeling provoked, Tan confronted the man at the restroom entrance before slapping him. The victim retaliated by pushing Tan, and the two exchanged punches. Tan repeatedly struck the victim in the face, while the victim’s blows caused Tan’s forehead to bleed.

After the fight, Tan left the restroom and entered a random KTV room, where he picked up an empty beer bottle. He returned to the restroom and flung the bottle onto the floor, causing it to shatter. Police were alerted and arrested him on November 30, 2023.

The victim was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with multiple injuries, including facial fractures. He was hospitalized until November 30 and granted 29 days of medical leave. While he was given a stern warning for his involvement in the case, Tan was formally charged.

Tan’s lawyer stated in court that he was remorseful and attempting to turn his life around. As part of his effort to make amends, he paid the victim $3,100 in compensation. However, the court sentenced him to five months in jail for the assault. Additionally, he was ordered to serve another 64 days behind bars for violating the terms of his remission order.

His bail was set at $15,000, and he is scheduled to begin his sentence on April 15.

Tan Hong Sheng was previously in the spotlight for his involvement in the Orchard Towers case in 2019. Initially charged with murder, his charge was later reduced, and he was convicted of a lesser offence. Another individual from the case, Tan Sen Yang, was sentenced to life imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane in 2024 for the murder of 31-year-old Satheesh Noel Gobidass.

***Update: HDB, Maincon and Consultant has came down to the unit to check. Will update on status once we have more information. A Punggol Northshore BTO homeowner, who moved into his newly renovated flat in July 2024, has voiced frustration over severe water leakage issues that have left his unit unsafe and unlivable. Water has been observed seeping from an electrical powerpoint, with puddles forming on the floor and walls showing bubbling and signs of damage from moisture. The source of the leak appears to be an external wall adjacent to the master bedroom, according to assessments by the main contractor. However, the leakage has already caused significant damage to the flat's walls and paintwork, leaving the homeowner distressed. Adding to the frustration, the main contractor advised the homeowner to avoid using the affected power switches in the living room and bedroom due to the risk of a short circuit. Despite the warning, the homeowner has no choice but to turn on the light...

Crackdown on Illegal Ride-Hailing with 4 Drivers Caught in LTA Operation

In a recent operation conducted by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore, four drivers were caught and had their vehicles impounded for providing illegal ride-hailing services. These unauthorized services operated both within Singapore and across the border to Malaysia, posing significant risks to passengers. The LTA has issued a stern warning to the public, advising against using such illegal services due to the lack of proper licensing and insurance, which can leave passengers vulnerable in the event of accidents. The operation underscores LTA’s commitment to ensuring the safety and regulation of ride-hailing services in Singapore. Drivers caught offering illegal ride-hailing services without a valid Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Licence face severe penalties, including fines of up to $3,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. These measures are in place to deter unlicensed operators and protect passengers from potential harm. Illegal ride-hailing services oft...
