Red Dot United Emily Woo Takes on Jurong Central SMC

Red Dot United (RDU) has announced Madam Emily Woo as its potential candidate for Jurong Central Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the upcoming General Election, slated for April 23, 2025. Woo, a 59-year-old music educator with over three decades of experience in Singapore and France, was introduced during a press event alongside RDU’s GRC team on April 16.

Jurong Central SMC is one of six new SMCs created following the latest electoral boundaries review. It has 29,620 voters and was carved out from the existing Jurong GRC and Yuhua SMC to maintain a balanced MP-to-voter ratio amid rapid population growth in the west, particularly Bukit Batok West and Tengah.

If confirmed as the RDU candidate on Nomination Day, Mdm Woo is expected to go head-to-head against the People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate Mr Xie Yao Quan, who previously served as MP for Jurong Central division under the former Jurong GRC. Mr Xie, 40, is a known figure in the constituency and has been active in community engagement in the area.

At the press conference, Mdm Woo boldly declared: “Mr Xie wanted a competitor, I am that competitor. I look forward to an interesting, amicable contest.”

Mdm Woo also voiced her intent to address local municipal issues, citing the persistent littering problem as one of her first priorities should she be elected. She emphasized her broader vision of ensuring that Singaporeans feel valued in their own country.

“I want to help build a Singapore where citizens feel like they are number one in their own country,” she said, adding that she would fight for “a fairer and Singaporeans-first society.”

Emily Woo holds a Bachelor in Music from the Catholic Institute University in Paris. Her teaching career spans over 30 years, with stints in both the local and French school systems. She has taught at primary and secondary levels, including at The French School, and currently teaches piano to students of all ages. She is also a published author of two books for music learners and has served as a judge in music competitions.

RDU introduced Mdm Woo as one of its “team leads” for Jurong Central last month during a walkabout at Yuhua Market and Hawker Centre, where she was spotted engaging residents.

In a statement on Wednesday, RDU said Woo is a firm believer in education as a great equaliser and advocates for smaller class sizes to help bridge learning gaps. The party also highlighted her push for fairer employment policies, especially for seniors who still wish to work and contribute to society.

“Emily believes education should be a leveller, not a privilege, and that policies must ensure economic security and dignity for all Singaporeans,” the party stated.

This contest between Woo and Xie sets the stage for a closely watched battle in a newly created ward. While PAP enters with an incumbent advantage, RDU is banking on grassroots engagement, social equity messaging, and a relatable, service-driven candidate in Woo.

The upcoming contest in Jurong Central is part of a broader effort by RDU to expand its footprint in the west, with its five-member team also contesting the new Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC. Together, these races will test the party’s ability to gain ground against the long-dominant PAP in what was once considered one of its strongest strongholds.

5% Fare Hike Approved: How Singapore's New Rates Affect You

Commuters in Singapore will see an increase in public transport fares starting December 27th, following an announcement made by the Public Transport Council on Tuesday, October 14th. The overall adjustment is set at 5 percent, a figure lower than the previous year's increase. For adult commuters using travel cards, this translates to an additional nine to ten cents per journey. The council highlighted that a significant number of concessionary journeys, over 450,000 trips made primarily by students and seniors traveling to schools, workplaces, or local amenities, cover distances of 3.2 kilometers or less and will not be affected by the main increase. For longer concessionary journeys beyond this distance, fares will rise by three to four cents. Adult cash fares will increase by twenty cents, while seniors and persons with dis...
