A newborn baby boy, born to underage parents, was found
buried in a garden, with authorities unable to determine whether he was
stillborn or died after birth. On April 2, State Coroner Adam
Nakhoda declared an open verdict, meaning the cause of death could
not be conclusively established due to the decomposed state of the infant’s
remains.
The case revealed a tragic sequence of events involving two
teenagers—a 15-year-old girl and her 14-year-old boyfriend—who
conceived the child in 2021 while they were classmates in secondary
school. Due to their young ages, a gag order was imposed to protect
their identities.
A Relationship That Turned Tragic
The couple began dating in May 2020 and engaged in
unprotected sex in the boy’s bedroom, as he found it difficult to buy condoms
due to his age. When the girl discovered she was pregnant, the pair
attempted multiple dangerous methods to terminate the pregnancy,
including:
- Inserting
a clothes hanger into her body,
- Taking abortion
pills,
- The
boy punching and kneeing her abdomen in an effort to induce a
miscarriage.
Despite these attempts, the girl went into labour in
June 2021 and gave birth alone in her bedroom, with the boy on
a video call. According to both teens, the baby did not cry or move after
birth, leading them to believe he was stillborn.
A Secret Burial & Eventual Discovery
The girl wrapped the infant in newspaper and hid
him in her cabinet for two days before burying him in her family’s
garden. She later admitted to visiting the burial spot to grieve in secret.
The couple broke up in March 2022, and a month later,
the girl’s mother noticed her withdrawn behaviour. After questioning, the girl
confessed, prompting her mother to alert the police.
Legal Consequences for the Teen Parents
In February 2024, the boy was sentenced to 21
months of supervised probation for having underage sex and instigating
the burial of their child. The girl received a conditional warning for
her involvement.
An Open Verdict & Unanswered Questions
Due to the advanced decomposition of the baby’s
remains, forensic experts could not determine if he was stillborn or died
shortly after birth. While the parents claimed he was stillborn, State
Coroner Nakhoda noted that the evidence was inconclusive.
The case has sparked discussions about:
- Teen
pregnancy and sex education in schools,
- Access
to safe abortion and contraception for minors,
- The
psychological impact on underage parents,
- Legal
and ethical dilemmas in similar cases.
A Call for Better Support Systems
This tragedy highlights the urgent need for better
guidance for young people regarding reproductive health, consent, and
crisis support. Experts argue that early intervention and confidential
counselling could prevent such desperate actions in the future.
The infant’s fate remains unresolved, but the case serves as a harsh reminder of the consequences when vulnerable teens are left without proper support.
