On 23 May 2025, a 36-year-old man was arrested within two hours for his suspected involvement in a loanshark harassment case at McNair Road. At approximately 9:05 AM, the police received a report regarding two residential units along McNair Road that had been vandalized with red liquid splashed on their main gates and doors.
Officers from the Central Police Division promptly initiated investigations, utilizing police camera footage and conducting ground inquiries. Their swift actions led to the identification and arrest of the suspect within two hours of the initial report.
The suspect is believed to have carried out the act of harassment under the instructions of an unlicensed moneylender. Such acts are typically intended to intimidate and pressure debtors into repaying loans.
The man was charged in court on 24 May 2025 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.
The police have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance towards loanshark harassment activities. They emphasized that individuals who deliberately vandalize properties, cause annoyance, and disrupt public safety and security will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist them in any way. The public can call the police at '999' if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
The swift arrest in this case underscores the effectiveness of the police's rapid response and investigative capabilities in addressing such crimes. It also serves as a deterrent to those considering involvement in illegal moneylending activities.
