Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, aged 28, was killed in a tragic car accident alongside his brother in northwestern Spain on Thursday, July 3, 2025, according to Spanish authorities. The incident occurred when a Lamborghini reportedly veered off the motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla, located in the province of Zamora, Castile-Leon region, shortly after midnight. The vehicle burst into flames upon impact.
Emergency services and the regional fire department responded to the crash site and found two deceased individuals, later confirmed to be Diogo Jota and his 26-year-old brother, Andre Felipe. Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The bodies were recovered and sent to a forensics unit in Zamora, where autopsies will be performed. The Portuguese Football Federation released a public statement, mourning the death of the national team player and his brother: “We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.”
The brothers had briefly been clubmates at FC Porto during the 2016/17 season. Diogo Jota was on loan at the time from Atletico Madrid, while his brother Andre was part of the youth academy.
In a separate statement, FC Porto said they were "deeply saddened" by the news and extended “heartfelt condolences to the family and friends” of the deceased.
Jota joined Liverpool FC in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, becoming a vital member of the squad. During his tenure, he made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals for the Merseyside club across all competitions. He played a key role in helping Liverpool win the Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup during his time at Anfield.
Internationally, Diogo Jota earned 49 caps with the Portuguese national team, contributing to their two UEFA Nations League titles. Known for his sharp finishing and relentless work ethic, Jota had become a household name in European football.
The loss of Jota has sent shockwaves through the global football community, with tributes pouring in from fans, fellow players, and clubs around the world. His death not only marks the sudden loss of a top-tier footballer but also a devoted family man whose career and personal milestones were closely followed by supporters.
As investigations continue into the cause of the accident, both the footballing world and the public await further updates from Spanish authorities. At present, no foul play is suspected.
