Cyclist Jailed for Running Red Light, Causing Elderly Pedestrian's Death

A 49-year-old man has been sentenced to two months in prison for a cycling incident that resulted in the death of a 70-year-old pedestrian. Lester Lu Su Min pleaded guilty to a charge of causing death by performing a rash act not amounting to culpable homicide. The sentence was handed down on October 31.

The incident occurred in the early morning of March 6, 2024, at a T-junction along Upper Bukit Timah Road. The court heard that Lu had left his home around 5:30 am to meet a friend for a cycling trip. After meeting at Upper Thomson Road, the two proceeded on their route, which took them along Mandai Road and then onto Upper Bukit Timah Road.

As Lu approached the specific T-junction, the traffic signal turned red. According to the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Lester Lu Su Min did not attempt to stop. Instead, he continued into the junction approximately five seconds after the light had turned red against him. At that same moment, the elderly pedestrian was legally crossing the road, as the "green man" signal was in his favor. Lu, cycling at a considerable speed, collided directly with the man.

The impact of the collision was severe. The 70-year-old victim was thrown onto the road surface, landing on his back. Emergency services were called to the scene, and the injured pedestrian was transported to the National University Hospital. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on the same day.

During the hearing, the prosecution sought a longer jail term of two and a half to three and a half months. The Deputy Public Prosecutor emphasized the deliberate nature of Lu's action, stating that he had consciously chosen to ride through the traffic light after it had been red for a significant five-second period. This rash act directly led to the collision with a pedestrian who was crossing with the right of way.

In delivering the sentence, the presiding District Judge acknowledged the unfortunate and sad circumstances of the case for both the individual responsible and the family of the deceased. The judge's remarks highlighted the tragic outcomes that can arise from such situations. The case serves as a sobering reminder that all road users, including cyclists, bear a significant responsibility to obey traffic signals and exercise due care to ensure public safety.
