A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to nine months in prison for punching another father during a dispute at an indoor playground, causing multiple facial fractures. Wong Chun Xiong was sentenced on October 9 after being convicted of one charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
The incident occurred on September 3, 2023, at the Bouncy Paradise playground located in Pandan Gardens. Wong was at the facility with his two children and other family members. The confrontation began after Wong's son reported that he had been scolded by an adult. Wong then approached a 56-year-old man who was in a ball pit with his own child.
When Wong questioned the man, the older father stated that Wong's son had "hit onto his child." A verbal argument ensued between the two men. According to the judge's summary of the events, the 56-year-old man subsequently jumped out of the ball pit and moved his head closer to Wong, who responded by stepping backwards. The situation quickly escalated into physical pushing and gesturing.
It was at this point that Wong threw a single punch with his right fist, striking the left side of the older man's face. The force of the blow caused the victim to fall backwards. Other adults present at the playground intervened, and the police were called to the scene. The victim sustained several displaced and undisplaced fractures to his face. He was granted 14 days of medical leave and faced potential long-term complications, including permanent nerve damage and scarring.
During the trial, Wong argued that his actions were justified under the right of private defence. However, the prosecution contended that the victim, who was nearly 20 years older and physically smaller than Wong, had not made any threatening gestures or initiated physical contact. The judge, after reviewing closed-circuit television footage multiple times, rejected the defence argument. The court found that Wong's use of force was not reasonable under the circumstances and that he had other options, such as walking away or seeking help from others present. In addition to the jail term, Wong was ordered to pay the victim approximately $408 in compensation.
