A 28-year-old youth worker has been sentenced to nine weeks imprisonment for physically assaulting a 12-year-old boy residing at a children's home in an attack that lasted over three minutes. The defendant, whose identity remains protected by court order to prevent identification of both the victim and the children's facility, pleaded guilty on October 29th to voluntarily causing hurt to a minor under fourteen years of age.
According to court proceedings presented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mark Chia, the assault followed a prior dispute between the youth worker and the child, though the specific nature of their disagreement was not disclosed during legal proceedings. The incident occurred on November 10th, 2024, while the victim was watching television in a common area within the children's residential facility.
The confrontation began when the youth worker approached the boy and forcefully shoved him in the chest. The physical altercation escalated rapidly as the defendant pushed the child with sufficient force to cause him to fall from his chair and strike a nearby wall. While the victim remained on the ground, the situation deteriorated further as the youth worker dragged him away from the wall before proceeding to repeatedly punch and kick the defenseless child.
Closed-circuit television footage presented as evidence in court documented the entire assault, which continued for more than three minutes despite the victim's audible screams of pain and visible distress. The visual evidence depicted the child shaking his head while the youth worker continued to deliver blows throughout the extended duration of the attack.
The victim sought medical examination on November 28th, 2024, more than two weeks following the physical assault, though medical professionals detected no visible injuries at that time. The method through which the youth worker's actions came to official attention was not specified during court proceedings.
In seeking a sentence of eleven to twelve weeks imprisonment, the prosecution emphasized that the defendant had fundamentally violated his position of authority and trust as a professional charged with caring for vulnerable children. Deputy Public Prosecutor Chia stressed that regardless of any potential provocation from the victim, the significant age difference and professional responsibility should have compelled the youth worker to maintain composure rather than engage in what the prosecutor characterized as "juvenile thuggery."
The defendant, who represented himself during legal proceedings, expressed remorse for his actions, stating: "I am very remorseful for what I did and I should have been more sensible." He requested a deferral of his sentence to accommodate his grandmother's birthday celebrations in November, which the court granted. Consequently, the youth worker will commence his nine-week imprisonment term on November 10th.
