61-Year-Old Driver Reverses At Speed, Knocks Elderly Woman, and Walks Away

 



Police are currently investigating a highly disturbing traffic accident caught on CCTV footage, which shows a 61-year-old male driver reversing his white sedan at speed and colliding with a 77-year-old female pedestrian in a housing estate near Ang Mo Kio.

The Incident Details

The accident occurred in Jalan Chengam, part of Sembawang Hills Estate off Upper Thomson Road. The police were alerted to the incident, involving a car and a pedestrian, at approximately 2:30 pm on a day prior to November 13 (as per the timestamp).

Footage of the incident was uploaded on the afternoon of November 13, showing the following sequence of events:

  • Preparation: A man is seen getting into a white car that was parked along the road.

  • Victim's Action: Simultaneously, the 77-year-old woman emerged from her landed home and was preparing to move a rubbish bin located near the car.

  • Impact: The driver suddenly and rapidly reversed his car, colliding directly into the woman and knocking her to the ground.

  • The Aftermath: Following the collision, the driver stopped and parked his car. In a move that has caused significant public concern, the 61-year-old man then got out of his vehicle and walked away from the woman he had just hit.

Police and Medical Response

The police confirmed that the 77-year-old woman was conscious when she was taken to Woodlands Health Campus by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for medical attention.

The 61-year-old driver is currently helping with police investigations into the accident. The investigation will focus on the exact cause of the sudden, high-speed reversing maneuver and the driver's subsequent failure to render aid before leaving the immediate vicinity of the injured woman.

The incident highlights serious concerns regarding road safety in residential areas and the legal and moral obligation of drivers to stop and assist after being involved in an accident.
