An Australian national faced a Singapore court and was sentenced to ten days in prison for a series of thefts committed while he was in transit at Changi Airport. Aaron Gary Slater, 45 years old, pleaded guilty to three charges of theft on October 31.
The incidents occurred on September 2. Slater was waiting for a connecting flight to the Maldives after arriving from Melbourne. Instead of proceeding to his gate, he embarked on a shoplifting spree within the transit area of Terminal 2. His criminal activities began at approximately 7:30 PM when he entered a store specializing in travel products. There, he selected a blue piece of luggage valued at one thousand and forty-five dollars from a shelf and exited the store without making any payment. This entire act was recorded by the store's security camera system.
However, his theft did not stop there. Over the course of that evening, he targeted several other retail outlets. The list of stolen items is extensive and includes a pink pyjamas set from Victoria's Secret worth one hundred and thirteen dollars, two pairs of Oakley sunglasses each valued at over three hundred and forty dollars, and a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses priced at three hundred and sixty-five dollars. He also took a brown Adidas bag worth eighty-one dollars, a Starbucks tumbler valued at fifty-two dollars, and several smaller items such as a luggage tag, five bracelets, and a black cap from Hard Rock Cafe. The total value of the goods stolen on that single day amounted to nearly three thousand five hundred dollars.
The situation came to light when a sales assistant at the Ray-Ban store reported a theft. Airport security personnel subsequently located Slater in the departure transit area. A search confirmed that he was in possession of all the stolen merchandise. Further investigation into his background revealed that this was not his first such incident at the airport. It was discovered that on July 28, while also in transit, he had stolen a black Tumi sling bag valued at over six hundred dollars. On that occasion, a store employee witnessed the theft, chased after him, and successfully retrieved the bag. A police report was not filed at that time. In court, his defence lawyer requested a shorter jail term of three days, stating that Slater had been stuck in Singapore without family support and had been unable to work during the legal proceedings. The court proceeded with the ten-day sentence.
