The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on November 25, 2025, that it recently conducted islandwide enforcement operations targeting errant heavy vehicle drivers, resulting in over 140 bookings for various serious offences, including overloading and travelling on expressways without the necessary permits.
Scale of Enforcement and Key Violations
The LTA stressed that these actions, overloading and unauthorized expressway travel are dangerous, endanger other road users, and cause damage to public road infrastructure. The Authority has vowed to continue its enforcement efforts to ensure safety and convenience for everyone.
The two primary categories of violations detected were:
Oversized and Excluded Vehicles (Unauthorized Expressway Use):
Bookings: Approximately 60 vehicles were caught travelling on expressways without a valid permit.
Risks: These vehicles pose a risk of obstructing traffic due to their size and weight, and can cause significant damage to road structures.
Overloaded Vehicles:
Bookings: A total of 85 vehicles were found carrying loads exceeding the legal allowance.
Risks: Overloaded vehicles are highly dangerous, creating serious risks such as goods spilling onto the road or compromising the vehicle’s handling and braking ability, thereby endangering other motorists.
Penalties for Offenders
The LTA highlighted the severe consequences faced by drivers and companies responsible for these violations:
First-Time Offenders: Face fines up to $1,000 and/or an imprisonment term of up to three months.
Repeat Offenders: Face double the penalties, underscoring the serious nature of these violations and the LTA's zero-tolerance stance toward repeat offences.
The successful operation emphasizes the LTA's commitment to regulating heavy vehicle traffic and ensuring all motorists adhere to safety and legal requirements regarding vehicle size, weight, and routes.
