Police Admit "No Leads" Connecting Namewee to Influencer Death

Malaysian rapper Namewee (Wee), aged 42, is scheduled to be released on police bail on Thursday, November 13, following a decision by the country’s Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC). This marks a significant development in the high-profile murder investigation of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh Yu-hsin, aged 31, who was found dead in a Kuala Lumpur hotel bathtub on October 22.

Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar confirmed the impending release late on Wednesday, stating that the police probe currently lacks any evidence that could connect the rapper to Hsieh’s death. "So far, there is no evidence that shows the suspect was involved in causing the influencer’s death," Dusuki was quoted as saying, though he added that the AGC has instructed further investigation and would take appropriate action if any new findings surface.

The case’s investigation paper was formally referred by the Kuala Lumpur police to the AGC on Tuesday. Under Malaysian law, the police are required to either formally charge or release a suspect once the period of the second remand lapses.

Background of the Case

Hsieh, widely known to her fans as the “nurse goddess” due to her background and looks, was found unresponsive in a hotel bathtub at Jalan Conlay in Kuala Lumpur on October 22. She was reportedly working on a video project with Namewee at the time.

Namewee reportedly found Hsieh unresponsive in the bathroom and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before contacting emergency services at 12:30 pm.

The case, which was initially classified as sudden death, was dramatically reclassified as murder on November 4, amidst public questions regarding the delay in the reclassification. Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution confirmed that authorities were following strict procedures in the investigation.

Namewee had voluntarily turned himself in to the police in the early hours of November 5. His initial remand was set to end on November 10 but was extended for another three days.

Relationship and Further Investigation

Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus previously confirmed that Wee and Hsieh shared a "special relationship," stating they were friends but also shared "other relationships" without elaborating on the full extent.

The investigation is not yet closed. Reports suggest that key toxicology and post-mortem examination reports on Hsieh are still pending and could take up to three months to be completed.

Before turning himself in for the murder probe, Namewee was already out on bail after being charged on October 24 with drug use and possession. The rapper, known for his controversial music that touches on issues like corruption and government inefficiency, stated on Instagram that he would "fully cooperate with the police investigation to give an explanation to the public and the deceased’s family," affirming his reputation for never fleeing from police requests.

A murder conviction in Malaysia carries a severe penalty, including the death penalty or imprisonment of 30 to 40 years and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

ICA Suspends Online Address Change Service After 80 Cases of Unauthorized Changes

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has suspended its electronic Change of Address (eCOA) service after uncovering about 80 unauthorized attempts to fraudulently change residential addresses using stolen or compromised Singpass accounts. The fraudulent activities targeted the “others” option in the eCOA service, introduced in October 2020 to allow proxies to assist individuals in updating their addresses online. This module has been temporarily disabled while the rest of the eCOA service is under review, slated to resume on Jan. 14 with enhanced security measures. How the Fraud Was Carried Out The perpetrators exploited compromised Singpass accounts by acquiring victims’ NRIC numbers and issue dates, enabling them to change addresses through the eCOA service. A verification PIN mailer was sent to the new fraudulent address, which the perpetrators used to confirm the change. This new address was then used to reset Singpass account passwords, allowing access to the vict...
