A major road accident involving two double-decker buses in Jurong West on the morning of December 14 resulted in a large-scale emergency response and the hospitalization of 44 people.
The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were alerted to the accident slightly before 11:00 AM. The collision occurred when Tower Transit-operated bus service 98 rear-ended an SBS Transit-run bus service 99, which was stationary, at approximately 10:55 AM in Jurong West Avenue 1.
The SCDF's arrival confirmed the severity of the crash: one person, a bus driver, was found trapped in the driver’s seat of a bus. The individual had to be rescued using specialized hydraulic rescue equipment. In total, 42 passengers and two bus drivers were taken to the hospital.
Police confirmed that a 49-year-old bus driver is currently assisting with ongoing investigations into the cause of the rear-end collision.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA), which confirmed the details in a Facebook post at about 2:10 PM, stated that both transport operators were investigating the accident and offered an apology for the "hurt and distress caused."
The aftermath of the collision painted a chaotic scene. When reporters arrived at the site around 12:30 PM, the area was cordoned off by police, with SCDF personnel actively working. Injured individuals were being attended to in a shelter near an HDB block, and at least one person was seen being taken to an ambulance on a stretcher. Eyewitness accounts detailed the extent of the injuries:
Madam Gao, 63, saw the aftermath at 11:30 AM and noted three passengers being attended to, two of whom were lying on a grass patch.
Madam Rosie Lian, 71, who heard a loud sound around 11:00 AM, saw many injured people, including an elderly woman with a bleeding nose and a man with a bandaged head.
Madam Peh Li, 72, who heard the loud crash from her HDB flat in Block 425, saw an elderly man bleeding from his mouth and a family of four sitting on a grass patch with wounds on their faces and legs.
Further specific details came from Mr. Wu, the son of a 70-year-old woman injured while seated on the lower deck of bus service 98. He stated his mother was thrown sideways upon impact, resulting in bruises and lacerations. She has since been discharged.
Photos of the scene clearly showed the violent nature of the impact, with the windscreen of one bus badly damaged and glass shattered, and the glass at the back of the other bus smashed. The emergency response involved at least three police cars, two ambulances, two SCDF vehicles, and two tow trucks.
In an update close to 10 PM, Senior Minister of State for Transport Murali Pillai provided a positive status report, noting that 23 people had been discharged from the hospital. The remaining 21 individuals who were warded, including one bus captain, were reported to be either in stable condition or undergoing medical reviews.
Both Tower Transit and SBS Transit issued public statements acknowledging the incident and confirming that affected passengers were receiving medical care. Tower Transit provided a contact number for affected passengers, while SBS Transit also released their contact details.
