Senior Citizen Sustains Triple Jaw Fracture After PMD Collision

A serious accident involving a personal mobility device rider and a pedestrian has left a 71-year-old woman with severe injuries. The victim, identified as Malar, was walking on a concrete shared pavement on December 10, 2025, when the incident occurred. The location of the collision was directly in front of the Pasir Ris Polyclinic, situated within the Pasir Ris Mall area. According to a social media statement released by her husband, Frank Singam, on December 17, 2025, the elderly woman was struck from behind by a platform rider on a bike.

The force of the impact caused the victim to fall forward, landing face-down on the hard concrete surface. Because the collision was unexpected and occurred from the rear, she was unable to break her fall, resulting in her chin absorbing the full weight of the impact. The medical consequences of the fall were extensive. Upon being admitted to Changi General Hospital, medical examinations revealed that she had sustained a triple fractured jaw. The attending medical professionals described the severity of the fractures as significant.

Following the diagnosis, the victim underwent a surgical procedure on December 12, 2025. During the operation, surgeons had to insert implants to stabilize the bone structure. Currently, her jaw is wire-locked to assist in the healing process and to ensure the fractures set correctly. The recovery period is expected to be long and challenging. For the next several weeks or possibly months, she is restricted to a strictly liquid diet. Furthermore, the physical limitations of the wire-locked jaw mean that engaging in simple conversation requires a significant amount of effort and work.

The family noted that while the injuries are life-altering, the situation could have been even more catastrophic. Given that the victim was wearing glasses at the time of the face-down fall, there was a high risk of severe facial or eye injuries. Additionally, the angle of the landing on her chin posed a serious risk of a neck injury. The family expressed a sense of relief and gratitude that the immediate response to transport her to the hospital was efficient, preventing further complications.

This accident has also caused significant emotional distress and the cancellation of long-held family plans. The couple had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. To mark this milestone, they had planned a celebratory trip to the United States to spend time with their family members. Due to the severity of the injuries and the intensive recovery required, this international trip had to be cancelled.

The incident has sparked a call for more stringent regulations and enforcement regarding the use of personal mobility devices on shared pathways in Singapore. The victim's husband highlighted the dangers faced by vulnerable groups, particularly senior citizens and children, when sharing pavements with fast-moving riders. He characterized the current etiquette and behavior of some riders as dangerous and appalling.

The public appeal emphasizes a need for the government to take decisive action to stop the practice of pavement sharing or to implement much heavier penalties for riders who disregard pedestrian safety. There is a strong call for deterrent punishments to instill better discipline among users of such devices. Furthermore, there is a suggestion to empower citizens to document irresponsible riding behavior and submit evidence to the police for follow-up enforcement action. The primary goal of sharing the details of this accident is to protect the vulnerable and ensure that pavements are safe for all pedestrians. Currently, the victim remains in Changi General Hospital as she begins her long journey toward recovery from the triple jaw fracture sustained in the Pasir Ris Mall vicinity.
