Tragic Chinatown Accident: 38-Year-Old Woman Charged for Death of Child

A tragic traffic accident in the heart of Chinatown has resulted in the death of a young child and the arrest of a 38-year-old driver. On February 6 2026, at approximately 11:50 AM, the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defence Force were alerted to a serious collision involving a car and two pedestrians along South Bridge Road. The victims were identified as a six-year-old girl and her 31-year-old mother, both tourists from Indonesia who were visiting Singapore with their family.

The family of four was reportedly crossing the road at the time of the incident. The father was walking slightly ahead, pushing a stroller containing their two-year-old child, while the mother and daughter followed behind. It was during this crossing that a blue BYD car struck the 31-year-old woman and the six-year-old girl.

Witnesses at the scene described a harrowing aftermath. In videos that appeared on social media, the father was seen sitting on the asphalt, cradling his unconscious daughter in his arms. The young girl’s face was covered in blood, and the father was heard crying and pleading with bystanders to help save his family. Nearby, the mother lay on the road. While she was initially unconscious, reports indicate she eventually regained consciousness at the scene, though she remained in a visibly weak and traumatized state.

Members of the public immediately stepped in to help the victims. One passerby was seen applying pressure to the young girl’s facial wounds in an attempt to stem the bleeding, while several others held umbrellas over the family to shield them from the intense midday heat while waiting for emergency responders to arrive. The SCDF confirmed that both the mother and the daughter were conveyed to Singapore General Hospital. While they were reportedly conscious during the transport to the hospital, the six-year-old girl’s condition deteriorated, and she subsequently passed away from her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle involved, a 38-year-old woman, remained at the scene to assist with police investigations. By February 8 2026, the police confirmed that she had been formally arrested. The charge against her is driving without reasonable consideration causing death. This specific arrest follows a preliminary review of the evidence surrounding the South Bridge Road collision.

This incident has sparked significant grief and concern among the public, especially given the family's status as visitors to the country. The loss of a child under such sudden and violent circumstances has led to an outpouring of sympathy for the Indonesian family. South Bridge Road is a high-traffic area popular with both locals and tourists, and the accident has raised questions regarding road safety and pedestrian awareness in busy heritage districts.

As of February 8 2026, police investigations are still active. Authorities are likely reviewing dashcam footage from the vehicle involved and other surrounding security cameras to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the collision. The 31-year-old mother’s current medical status has not been further updated, though she was receiving treatment at Singapore General Hospital for her injuries. The police continue to urge road users to exercise caution and consideration at all times to prevent such devastating tragedies.

SIA Business Class Theft: Chinese National Jailed for Syndicate Operation

On December 23, 2025, Liu Ming, a 26-year-old Chinese national, was sentenced to 20 months in prison for committing a high-value theft on a Singapore Airlines flight. The case serves as a stark reminder of the organized nature of in-flight criminal syndicates that target premium passengers on long-haul routes. Liu was convicted of one count of theft after investigations revealed he was part of a larger criminal organization that specifically financed his travel to carry out mid-air robberies. The incident occurred during a flight departing from Dubai on August 7, which was scheduled to land in Singapore the following morning. Liu had been placed in the business class cabin, a seat funded by the criminal syndicate he represented, to give him access to wealthy travelers and their high-value belongings.
