Amos Yee Returned to Singapore and Charged with Enlistment Offences

A twenty seven year old Singapore citizen identified as Amos Yee has been brought before a court on March 20 2026 to face multiple charges under the Enlistment Act. The legal action follows his deportation from the United States which took place on March 19 2026. Yee who is also a recorded child sex offender in the United States was apprehended by enlistment inspectors from the Central Manpower Base immediately upon his arrival at Changi Airport. The authorities from the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed that because he remains a Singapore citizen he was returned to the Republic using a document of identity in place of a valid passport.

During his court appearance which was conducted via video link at approximately 11.50am Yee appeared with long hair and was dressed in a long sleeved black shirt. The prosecution made a formal application for the accused to be remanded at Changi Prison to facilitate further investigations into his case. The judge granted this request and bail was not offered to the accused. During the brief session Yee informed the court that he does not intend to engage the services of a lawyer to represent him.

The charge sheets detail several alleged violations of the Enlistment Act spanning over a decade. Yee is accused of leaving the country without a valid exit permit on two separate occasions. The first period of absence is alleged to have occurred between December 13 2015 and April 19 2016. The second and more significant period began on December 15 2016 and lasted until his return on March 19 2026. This second period of absence totals nine years three months and four days. Additionally he faces a charge for failing to report for a required national service pre enlistment medical screening between April 26 2016 and March 19 2026.

The history of this case dates back to late 2016 when Yee fled to the United States to seek asylum following multiple legal issues in Singapore related to derogatory comments made about various religious groups. Although he was granted asylum in March 2018 his time in the United States was marked by further criminal activity. In 2020 he was indicted in an Illinois court for the solicitation and possession of child pornography. These charges stemmed from an exchange of explicit messages and photographs with a fourteen year old girl. He was sentenced for these crimes on December 2 2021.

While serving a six year sentence in the United States Yee was released on parole in October 2023. However he was re arrested just one month later for allegedly violating the terms of his parole which included strict limitations on internet usage and proximity to areas frequented by children. Following these events he was transferred through various immigration and customs enforcement facilities before being officially removed from the United States on March 19 2026.

Under the Enlistment Act individuals who fail to comply with national service regulations can face serious legal penalties. These include a fine of up to 10,000 dollars a prison sentence of up to three years or both. The Singapore authorities have reiterated their stance on the importance of fulfilling national service obligations and ensuring that citizens who flout these rules are held accountable upon their return to the country. The case has been adjourned and is scheduled for a further hearing on March 26 2026 while the accused remains in remand for continued investigation by the relevant agencies.
