Major Drug Bust at Tuas Checkpoint Leads CNB to Tampines Residence Raid

 

A joint operation conducted by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority and the Central Narcotics Bureau resulted in the seizure of illicit drugs valued at more than one million Singapore dollars and the arrest of two suspects. The enforcement action commenced on September 23, 2026, when authorities intercepted a suspected drug smuggling attempt at Tuas Checkpoint, which subsequently led to a follow-up raid in Tampines.


The initial interception occurred when Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officers at Tuas Checkpoint directed a Malaysia-registered motorcycle for enhanced inspection. During the search of the motorcycle's rear storage box, officers discovered sealed packets disguised with commercial biscuit labels that contained suspected controlled substances. Central Narcotics Bureau officers were alerted to the discovery and carried out additional checks on the vehicle, uncovering further concealed packets.

The total volume of illicit substances seized from the Malaysia-registered motorcycle amounted to nearly seven kilograms of heroin, approximately one kilogram of Ice, and one kilogram of cannabis. The rider, a 32-year-old Malaysian man, was arrested at the checkpoint on suspicion of drug importation. Authorities estimated that the narcotics recovered from the motorcycle possessed significant street value and represented a substantial attempt to move controlled substances across the border.

Following the checkpoint arrest, Central Narcotics Bureau officers launched follow-up investigations to identify local connections linked to the shipment. On the same day, officers executed an inland enforcement operation in the vicinity of Tampines Street 83. During the operation, officers arrested a 41-year-old Singaporean man for suspected drug offenses.

Subsequent to his arrest, Central Narcotics Bureau officers conducted a search of the 41-year-old man's residential unit in Tampines. The search yielded additional illicit drugs, including approximately 790 grams of heroin, 602 grams of cannabis, 127 grams of Ice, 51 grams of Ecstasy tablets, and 21 grams of ketamine. In addition to the narcotics, officers confiscated cash amounting to 33,086 Singapore dollars from the suspect and the residential premises.

In a joint statement released on September 28, 2026, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority and the Central Narcotics Bureau confirmed that the total combined value of the drugs seized at Tuas Checkpoint and the Tampines residential unit exceeded one million Singapore dollars. The authorities noted that the combined quantities of heroin, Ice, and cannabis recovered during the operation were sufficient to feed the addiction of approximately 4,598 drug abusers for a week.

Official investigations into the activities of both arrested individuals remain ongoing. Under Section 7 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, any person found guilty of importing or exporting more than 15 grams of diamorphine, more than 250 grams of methamphetamine, or more than 500 grams of cannabis into or out of Singapore faces the mandatory death penalty. Furthermore, under Section 5 of the same Act, unauthorized trafficking of controlled substances above specified statutory thresholds also carries the death penalty. Both agencies reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict border security and executing swift inland enforcement operations to disrupt drug trafficking networks.
