Singapore Customs conducted operations on January 31, 2024, at Jurong West Street 74 and Bukit Batok Street 31 to combat tax evasion.
Two male Singaporeans, aged 21 and 24, were arrested in separate incidents, with a total of 4,420 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes seized along with two vans.
The total amount of duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) evaded was approximately $542,959. Investigations revealed a coordinated effort involving the suspects using social messaging platforms to orchestrate the smuggling activities.
Both men are facing court proceedings under the Customs Act and the GST Act, which carry penalties of hefty fines, imprisonment, and vehicle forfeiture for offenders.
