Indian National Caught Stealing $742 Worth of Perfume at Changi Airport

A 28-year-old Indian national was arrested at Changi Airport for allegedly stealing four bottles of perfume worth approximately $742 from different retail stores within the transit area. The incident took place on March 15, 2024, when airport police were alerted to a suspected shop theft at The Shilla Duty Free Cosmetic Shop in Terminal 2’s Departure Transit area.

Retail staff conducting an inventory check discovered that two bottles of perfume were missing. Upon reviewing CCTV footage, they noticed a woman taking the perfume without making any payment. Staff immediately informed a security officer who was on patrol, and he quickly located the suspect within the transit area before she could board her flight out of Singapore.

When confronted, the woman initially returned only one bottle of perfume. However, a search of her belongings revealed another three bottles, confirming that she had taken a total of four bottles from multiple stores.

Further investigations showed that she had also visited another retail shop within the airport, where she took two additional bottles of perfume without paying. All four stolen items were eventually recovered and returned to their respective stores.

Following her arrest, police identified her as a transit passenger who had not yet departed Singapore. She is now facing a charge of theft in dwelling and will appear in court on March, 2024.

Under Singapore’s law, theft in dwelling carries severe penalties, including a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, or both. This case highlights the strict enforcement of shoplifting laws at Changi Airport, where security measures such as CCTV surveillance and patrol officers are in place to prevent such crimes.

Changi Airport is known for its world-class security and efficient law enforcement. Cases of theft within its premises are taken seriously, as transit passengers are closely monitored to ensure compliance with the law. Retailers conduct regular inventory checks, and CCTV cameras help track suspicious activities, leading to swift action against offenders.

In similar past cases, shoplifters caught at Changi Airport have faced significant legal consequences. The arrest of this woman serves as a reminder that attempting to steal, even while in transit, can lead to serious repercussions, including arrest and legal action before departure.

Authorities have reiterated that Changi Airport maintains strict security protocols, and offenders will not be able to evade detection. Theft, even of seemingly minor items, can lead to serious criminal charges and possible jail time.

The woman’s upcoming court appearance will determine the legal consequences of her actions. If convicted, she could face several years in prison or a hefty fine, reflecting Singapore’s firm stance on crime prevention, particularly within key transportation hubs like Changi Airport.
