Singapore Police Officer Charged for Forging Statements in Criminal Cases

On May 21, 2025, a 35-year-old police officer, S Vikneshvaran s/o Subramaniam, was charged in the State Courts of Singapore for allegedly forging police statements and documents related to cases he investigated between 2021 and 2023. The charges stem from irregularities discovered during a supervisory check in January 2023, which revealed issues concerning case exhibits and document management.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) had placed Vikneshvaran under enhanced supervision in October 2022 due to concerns about his work performance. The subsequent review uncovered that he had allegedly forged nine documents, comprising seven police statements and two acknowledgment slips, across seven cases. These cases included five ongoing criminal investigations and two concluded cases that did not result in prosecution.

In the five ongoing cases, Vikneshvaran is accused of conducting verbal interviews with individuals, either in person or over the phone, and then recording these as official police statements. He allegedly forged the signatures of the individuals involved in these statements. Upon discovery of these irregularities, the SPF took immediate remedial actions, including reassigning the cases to new investigation officers who properly recorded the necessary statements.

The Attorney-General's Chambers reassessed the affected cases after the remedial investigations and determined that there was no miscarriage of justice resulting from Vikneshvaran's actions. No other wrongdoing was uncovered during the review.

The SPF emphasized that it takes a serious view of law enforcement officers who contravene the law and will take swift and decisive action to protect the integrity of the criminal justice system. Officers are expected to uphold the law and maintain the highest standards of conduct and integrity. The SPF deals severely with officers who break the law, including charging them in court.

Vikneshvaran has been interdicted from duty pending the outcome of the legal proceedings. The SPF has systems in place for regular audits of cases, and supervisors are alerted when lapses are detected. Officers showing signs of underperformance are closely monitored, and internal investigations are swiftly conducted if any irregularities are discovered.

The case highlights the importance of maintaining integrity within law enforcement agencies and the mechanisms in place to detect and address misconduct. The SPF's prompt response to the irregularities demonstrates its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring public trust in the criminal justice system.

Pritam Singh Confronts Govt Over GST Hike and Inflation

During the Budget debate in Parliament, Leader of the Opposition and Workers’ Party chief Pritam Singh criticized the government’s decision to increase the Goods and Services Tax (GST), arguing that it was unnecessary given Singapore’s strong financial position. He also raised concerns about the government’s ability to accurately project its fiscal needs, labeling it as poor fiscal marksmanship. Singh pointed out that the government had initially projected a fiscal surplus of S$778 million for 2024, but later revised it significantly to S$6.4 billion. The 2025 fiscal surplus is now estimated at S$6.8 billion. He noted a recurring trend where the government predicted budget deficits in past years, only to report large surpluses later. This raised questions about whether the GST hike was truly necessary or if the government had overestimated its financial constraints. He argued that even if an increase was deemed necessary in 2023, the government had room to delay the second hike i...
