On June 13, 2025, the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group announced that it would offer employment opportunities to retrenched staff from Jetstar Asia, following the airline’s announcement that it will cease operations on July 31, 2025. Jetstar Asia had earlier revealed on June 11 that over 500 employees will be laid off due to the impending closure.
In response, the SIA Group stated it would create over 300 positions within its own airline network to support the affected individuals. This includes 100 jobs for pilots and 200 positions for cabin crew, available across its entities including Scoot and Singapore Airlines. The Group emphasized its commitment to assisting as many affected Jetstar Asia employees as possible in continuing their aviation careers.
The Group has also planned on-site recruitment and engagement efforts. From June 17 to June 19, representatives from both SIA and Scoot will be stationed at Jetstar Asia’s office to meet directly with interested employees. These sessions will provide information about available roles and facilitate a smoother transition for those seeking to remain in the aviation industry.
An SIA spokesperson acknowledged the uncertainty facing the affected employees and affirmed the Group’s intent to provide comprehensive support during the recruitment and onboarding process. The spokesperson also noted that the experience of Jetstar Asia’s personnel is highly valued, and the Group looks forward to integrating suitable candidates into its workforce.
The move was part of a broader response initiated on the same day Jetstar Asia’s closure was announced. Labour chief Ng Chee Meng stated that the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) was actively exploring employment options for the affected Jetstar Asia employees, including redeployment within the SIA Group.
In line with these efforts, SIA Group also established dedicated application channels specifically for the retrenched employees to expedite and simplify the application process. The Group aims to make it easier for former Jetstar Asia staff to be considered for suitable roles within its operations.
Jetstar Asia, which has been a familiar name in Singapore’s low-cost aviation sector, announced the shutdown as part of a strategic decision, ending its operations after years of service. The closure has triggered widespread concern, particularly for the workforce, many of whom have built long careers in aviation.
The collaboration between SIA Group, Scoot, Jetstar Asia, and NTUC aims to minimize the career disruption for affected employees and retain their expertise within the national aviation ecosystem. With the offer of over 300 roles and direct outreach efforts, the initiative reflects a comprehensive effort to cushion the impact of the airline’s closure and ensure continuity for its experienced aviation professionals.
