Silver Car Hogs Bus Lane and Repeatedly Brakes in Front of SBS Bus

On January 26 2026, SBS Transit confirmed that it had lodged an official police report against the driver of a silver car for reckless behavior on the road. The incident, which took place on the afternoon of January 23 2026, involved the car allegedly hogging a bus lane and performing multiple abrupt brakes in front of a moving public bus. This took place along a busy five-lane stretch of Geylang Road, affecting bus service 51.

According to SBS Transit spokesperson Grace Wu, the silver car entered the extreme left lane where the bus was operating. The spokesperson highlighted that the car drove at an unusually slow speed and repeatedly applied its brakes suddenly. These actions were taken despite there being no other vehicles or obstacles in front of the car that would necessitate such maneuvers. The transport operator emphasized that the report was necessary because the driver’s conduct created a potential safety hazard for other road users and, most importantly, for the bus commuters on board who could have been injured by a sudden emergency stop.

The incident gained widespread public attention after a video was uploaded to the social media platform TikTok on the afternoon of January 23 2026. The footage, which has since surpassed 188,000 views, captures the silver car moving ahead of the bus in the fourth lane before shifting into the bus lane. In the video, the bus driver can be heard over the intercom or to the control center stating that the car was traveling at a speed of approximately 10kmh. As the bus driver attempted to navigate around the vehicle by moving into the leftmost lane, the car appeared to mirror the bus's movement, eventually coming to a momentary halt directly at a bus stop.

The legal implications of such behavior are significant under Singapore's traffic laws. According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), normal bus lanes are restricted to authorized vehicles on Mondays to Fridays during peak hours: from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. While the exact time of the January 23 incident has not been confirmed, driving in these lanes during restricted hours is a fineable offense. Furthermore, traffic regulations strictly prohibit private vehicles from parking or stopping within 9m of a bus stop to ensure that public transport can pick up and drop off passengers safely and efficiently.

Public reaction to the viral footage has been mixed. While many netizens condemned the car driver for what appeared to be deliberate "road hogging" or "brake checking," others speculated on social media that the driver might have been experiencing mechanical difficulties or was an elderly driver in distress. However, SBS Transit’s decision to involve the police suggests they view the behavior as a breach of road safety standards. The police confirmed on January 26 2026 that they had received the report and are currently reviewing the footage and evidence provided to determine if further action is warranted against the car driver.

Road hogging and dangerous driving remain serious concerns for public transport operators. In 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs has continued to emphasize road safety, with enhanced demerit points and fines for various traffic violations. If the driver is found to have intentionally obstructed the bus or driven in a dangerous manner, they could face significant fines or even a suspension of their driving license. The investigation into this Geylang Road incident remains ongoing as authorities seek to clarify the motives behind the driver's actions.
